Market value
Market value The value of a security at a particular point in time. Market values are a result of the process of price determination.
Depending on the type of security involved, the market value is expressed either as a unit quotation or a percentage quotation:
- The market values of stocks and options are published by the stock exchange as unit quotations (i. e., in currency units per share).
- The market values of bonds and future contracts are expressed as percent quotations (i. e., as a percentage of the nominal value).
- market value = nominal value x price/100
The market value of a security is used as the basis for tax valuation.
