Premiere of the “Evening of Excellence” in Eschborn

With the inaugural Evening of Excellence on June 15, 2026, Deutsche Börse launched a new long-term format dedicated to fostering high-quality dialogue, networking, and the continuous professional development of supervisory board members.

Around 100 guests – including graduates of the Qualified Supervisory Board Member program, training providers, and representatives of the program management and examination committee – came together for this first alumni event. The evening underscored a key message: excellence in supervisory board work is not a destination, but an ongoing process.

A particular highlight was the keynote address by Dr. Katrin Suder, Chair of the Supervisory Board of DHL Group, who provided valuable insights into how technological developments – especially artificial intelligence – are transforming the boardroom and creating new challenges and opportunities for corporate governance.

The ceremonial highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Qualified Supervisory Board Member certificates to the Class of 2026. The certification recognizes not only the successful completion of the examination but also the commitment to assume responsibility at the highest level.

The Evening of Excellence marks the beginning of a broad and vibrant alumni network designed to foster meaningful exchange, critical dialogue, and lasting connections in support of effective and responsible supervisory board work. We look forward to continuing the conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Qualified Supervisory Board Member and the Certified independent board director, Financial expert or Certified independent board director, Audit Committee expert certifications?

The Qualified Supervisory Board Member Exam (Qualifizierter Aufsichtsrat) is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary certification program. The examination covers key governance topics such as corporate management and strategy, compliance, risk management, and sustainability (ESG).

The Certified independent board director, Financial expert (Fachaufsichtsrat Financial Expert) and Certified independent board director, Audit Committee expert exam (Fachaufsichtsrat im Prüfungsausschuss) are specialized, advanced certifications. Designed specifically for current and future members of audit committees, they deepen expertise in corporate finance, financial reporting, internal control systems, and sustainability reporting. These certifications address the heightened regulatory requirements resulting from the Financial Market Integrity Act (FISG) and the German Corporate Governance Code (DCGK).

Who can apply for the Qualified Supervisory Board Member Exam, and what are the prerequisites?

The Qualified Supervisory Board Member Exam is designed for members of supervisory boards, advisory boards, and comparable governing bodies, as well as individuals aspiring to join them. Managing directors, management board members, heads of investor relations, or professionals who work closely with these roles and wish to optimize their collaboration with supervisory bodies are also highly encouraged to obtain the certification from Deutsche Börse. By passing the exam, participants document their deep and comprehensive knowledge of supervisory board responsibilities.

Applicants must have completed a preparatory course with a provider certified by Deutsche Börse and provide proof of leadership experience or active supervisory board activity. Detailed information regarding admission requirements can be found in the examination regulations.

If you do not meet the aforementioned criteria but can demonstrate that you will shortly be assuming a role on a supervisory board, you may still be admitted to the exam based on a discretionary decision. Registration for the exam is only possible after formal admission has been granted.

What is the difference between the Certified independent board director, Financial expert exam and the Certified independent board director, Audit Committee expert exam and what are their prerequisites?

The Certified independent board director, Financial expert (Fachaufsichtsrat Financial Expert) and Certified independent board director, Audit Committee expert exams are identical. The designation of the title on your certificate depends entirely on your specific professional background and qualifications.

The title of Certified independent board director, Audit Committee expert is available to individuals who have either successfully passed the Certified Supervisory Board Member Exam or can demonstrate at least 5 years of active service on a supervisory board or comparable governing body. Before being eligible to participate in the examination, you must have completed a preparatory course with a provider certified by Deutsche Börse. Detailed admission requirements can be found in the examination regulations.

To qualify for the title of Certified independent board director, Financial expert, you must additionally provide proof of professional experience as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or comparable position, long-term practice as a certified tax advisor or auditor, or having obtained leadership experience in accounting and controlling.

Upon passing the exam, the respective title will be indicated on your certificate. In both cases, exam registration is only possible after formal admission.
