Deutsche Börse Group

Business newsletter

April 2020

Dear reader,

As a reliable market infrastructure provider, trusted partner and caring employer, we take the global COVID-19 situation very seriously. We continue to closely monitor the situation at all company locations and worldwide and remain in close contact with our customers, suppliers, our regulators and the competent bodies to assess the situation at hand on a daily basis.

Fair, safe and transparent trading on the stock exchange has a crucial economic function, especially in these turbulent times. To ensure its stability, we rely on proven protective mechanisms along the entire process chain in stock exchange trading. Our volatility interruption in Xetra® trading and at Eurex ensures that trading runs smoothly even in extreme market conditions. In our newsletter, we explain how the volatility interruption works, how it is triggered and what other protective mechanisms exist.

They are known as easy, transparent and flexible: Exchange Traded Funds, better known by their abbreviation ETF. They celebrate their 20th anniversary in Germany on 11 April. Deutsche Börse introduced ETF trading to Europe in 2000 with no more than two products. The Xetra platform has since become the European leader in this rapidly growing market. In our series, we look at the development of ETFs from different perspectives – and highlight trends, innovations and structural changes in the markets.

Last but not least: Deutsche Börse Group‘s 2019 annual report is now online, presented in a clear and user-friendly way on our landing page. It provides all relevant facts and figures about last year.

I hope you enjoy reading and discovering this edition of our newsletter. Stay healthy.

Kind regards,
Mareike Sich

Protection in extreme situations

If the price of a security starts to swing too wildly,  trading is switched automatically from continuous trading to auction for at least two minutes. This decelerates trading, gives market participants time to get their bearings and prevents the market from taking off unchecked in one direction.
