25 Years of Art Collection Deutsche Börse
|
What, to you, constitutes the essence of photography? To me, it is far more than a mere depiction of reality. Like a window, it allows us to see the world through the artists’ eyes, sharing both their impressions and experiences, and opening up perspectives that would otherwise remain beyond our perception.
It is this creative force which the works of the Art Collection Deutsche Börse bear witness to, and we are looking forward to the coming months with great anticipation as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our collection. Established a quarter century ago, it today brings together more than 2,300 works by around 160 artists from 35 nations, making it one of the most important international collections of contemporary photography. In the spirit of cooperation, dialogue, and diversity – the three guiding principles of our anniversary year – our activities focus on the diversity of voices within the collection alongside a vivid exchange with artists and partner institutions from around the globe. In addition to several exhibitions at our company headquarters The Cube in Eschborn, this year’s programme includes various exhibition projects brought to life in cooperation with our international partners, as well as awards and a new illustrated collection catalogue. We kicked off the programme with last week’s opening of the exhibition “Chris Killip. A Retrospective”. Until mid-May, it will offer insights into the influential British photographer’s work, who conjured a portrait of the people of Great Britain in the 1970s and 1980s that is equally haunting as it is empathetic.
The visual languages and photographic approaches shown in the Art Collection are as diverse as the origin, age, or artistic self-image of the represented photographers, ranging from documentary to conceptual. Each position offers its own perspective on the collection’s central theme, the “conditio humana”, the exploration of the conditions of human existence and its position in the world.
I hope you enjoy reading this first InsightOut edition of the year!
